Your Reading Choices Matter More Than You Think
As readers, we love comics.
We love discovering new stories, falling in love with characters, and escaping into worlds that talented creators spend countless hours bringing to life.
And naturally, we want to support the people who make those experiences possible.
But are we really supporting our favorite creators as much as we think we are?
It's an uncomfortable question, but one worth asking.
Because sometimes, without realizing it, we prioritize our own convenience over the well-being of the very people whose work we love.
THE CONVENIENCE OF BIG PLATFORMS
Let's face it. Platforms like Webtoon and Tapas became popular for good reasons.
They offer enormous libraries of comics and seemingly endless entertainment at our fingertips.
Why visit several websites when thousands of comics are available in one place?
It's understandable.
But behind every comic is a creator who has invested countless hours writing, illustrating, and promoting their work.
Independent creators helped build these platforms. They brought their stories, audiences, and communities, transforming small publishing websites into enormous businesses.
Yet as these platforms grew, many independent creators struggled for visibility while commercially promoted titles received greater attention.
The very creators who helped build these audiences were increasingly left fighting for a place within them.
THE HIDDEN COST OF EXCLUSIVITY
Large publishing platforms like Webtoon and Tapas have spent years presenting exclusive publishing contracts as incredible opportunities.
Professional recognition. Financial stability. The possibility of turning a passion into a career.
For an independent creator, it can feel like winning the lottery.
But why have even successful, established creators chosen to walk away from these exclusive arrangements?
We're talking about creators who built enormous followings, attracted millions of readers, and contributed to the success of these platforms.
If these contracts offer such extraordinary opportunities, why would successful creators choose not to continue?
Perhaps we should listen to what creators have been telling us.
Relentless production schedules. Creative restrictions. Increasing demands. Compensation that doesn't always reflect the extraordinary work involved.
Think about the absurdity of it.
A creator can spend years building a story and attracting an enormous audience, helping a platform generate traffic and revenue.
Yet that same creator can find themselves with less freedom, greater demands, and limited control over their own work.
Not every exclusive agreement is exploitative, but the recurring concerns raised by creators deserve our attention.
Instead of asking why successful creators are leaving, perhaps we should ask what these platforms are doing to make them want to stay.
WE HAVE MORE POWER THAN WE REALIZE
We hear these stories. We see creators expressing frustration over their working conditions, compensation, and creative independence.
And what do we do?
Too often, nothing.
We return to the same platforms because they're familiar and convenient.
But why would enormous corporations reconsider their priorities if we continue rewarding the same behavior?
We cannot expect the industry to change if we're unwilling to change even the smallest of our own habits.
Every visit, subscription, and recommendation contributes to the success of the platforms we choose.
Reading on large platforms can also benefit creators, but we shouldn't assume every view translates into meaningful financial support for the artist.
If we genuinely care about independent comics, our support shouldn't end with enjoying the content.
It should extend to the people creating it.
WHEN QUANTITY BECOMES MORE IMPORTANT THAN CREATIVITY
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly common in digital publishing, some platforms have begun welcoming AI-generated work alongside comics created by human artists.
Are we building an industry that celebrates creativity and originality, or one that values the quantity of content over the people producing it?
At Fables, our position is clear.
We believe in human creativity. We believe in the artists and writers who dedicate themselves to their craft. And we believe their work deserves to be protected and celebrated.
A comic isn't simply content to fill a catalog.
It's someone's imagination, passion, and countless hours of hard work.
And that should mean something.
WHY READING ON FABLES MAKES A DIFFERENCE
This is exactly why we created Fables.
We wanted to build a publishing platform that puts independent creators first.
A platform where creators aren't competing against our own corporate-produced titles for preferential treatment.
Where artists and writers maintain control over their stories, develop their identities, and enjoy the freedom to present their work as they envision it.
We've invested heavily in publishing tools that allow creators to customize their series and episode pages, giving readers unique experiences that reflect the worlds these artists have imagined.
We want creators to enjoy the freedom of having their own websites, combined with the convenience, discoverability, and community of a shared publishing platform.
But most importantly, we're not building a business around acquiring exclusive rights to independent creators' work.
We're building a business around helping those creators succeed.
Our publishing tools make their lives easier. Our community initiatives help them connect with readers. And our monetization program rewards participating creators for eligible reading activity.
When you discover a series, subscribe, comment, or share something you love, you're helping independent creators grow their audiences.
And when eligible reading activity generates advertising revenue, participating creators can share in that success.
At Fables, every action you take helps support the independent creative community we're building together.
Because we believe a publishing platform should succeed by helping its creators succeed, not at their expense.
THE FUTURE OF INDEPENDENT COMICS IS IN OUR HANDS
We're not asking you to abandon your favorite comics or stop supporting creators who publish elsewhere.
We're simply asking you to consider where you choose to read.
If you have the opportunity to enjoy a comic on a platform that prioritizes independent creators, why wouldn't you?
If you believe artists deserve creative freedom, why not support a platform that encourages it?
If you believe creators should be fairly rewarded for their work, why not choose a platform that makes supporting them part of its business model?
You don't need to spend money to make a difference.
Sometimes, all it takes is choosing where you read.
Discover an independent comic. Leave a thoughtful comment. Share it with a friend. Help a creator find their next reader.
Because the future of independent comics shouldn't be determined solely by the corporations distributing them.
It should be shaped by the creators who bring those stories to life and the readers who believe their work deserves to thrive.
At Fables, we're building a home for both.
Join us at Fables. Discover incredible independent comics. And help us build an industry where supporting the stories you love means supporting the people who create them.
