Hee. Spider Robinson effectively went through the same thing you did in the science fiction genre. He had a boring job, so he spent most of his time reading. After flinging about a dozen books across the room while shouting "I could write better than this turnip!", he started writing.

Haha, nice! I hope my book is received well when it finally comes out. The good thing is that years of writing comic stories has taught me to avoid first time author problems.
